Whether you're refreshing your LinkedIn profile or building a personal brand, your headshot or branding photos should reflect you—confident, polished, and approachable. One of the most common questions I get as a photographer is:
"What Should I Wear??"
Here’s your guide to looking and feeling your best in front of the camera.
FOR WOMEN: CONFIDENCE MEETS SIMPLICITY
1. Choose Colors That Flatter You
Solid, rich colors tend to photograph best—think jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, burgundy), earthy neutrals, or soft pastels if they complement your skin tone. Avoid neon, overly bright colors, or anything too close to your skin tone, which can wash you out.
Tip: If you're unsure, bring two options and we can test both!
2. Stick with Simple Patterns (or None at All)
Busy prints can distract from your face. Thin stripes, tiny florals, or loud patterns don’t translate well on camera. If you love texture or pattern, choose something subtle—like a textured blouse, a soft plaid, or a classic pinstripe.
3. Fit Over Fashion
Tailored pieces that fit well make a world of difference. Avoid anything too loose or too tight. A structured blazer, a fitted blouse, or a dress that flatters your shape works beautifully.
4. Layers Add Depth
A cardigan, blazer, denim jacket, or even a lightweight scarf can add visual interest without overwhelming your face. Layers also give us flexibility to create multiple looks in one session.
5. Avoid Distracting Accessories
Earrings and necklaces should complement, not compete. Skip oversized statement jewelry and opt for classic, minimal pieces. Same goes for watches, glasses, or anything with logos.
6. Necklines Matter
A modest v-neck, scoop neck, or boatneck is flattering on most women. High necks can work too—just avoid anything that cuts you off awkwardly at the neck or adds bulk.
7. Hair & Makeup: Aim for Polished, Not Overdone
Go for your “best everyday” look. A little more blush and mascara than usual helps bring your features forward in photos. If you're hiring a makeup artist, let them know this is for photography so they can enhance your features without going glam-heavy (unless that’s your brand!).
BONUS: WHAT ABOUT MEN??
Men, you’re not off the hook!
Choose a well-fitted button-up, polo, or blazer in a solid, flattering color. Avoid large logos or distracting patterns. If you're wearing a tie, make sure it’s neat and complements your shirt. Trim facial hair, tame flyaways, and give your skin a little hydration beforehand for a clean, fresh look.
The goal of your headshots or branding photos is to highlight who you are—professionally, creatively, and authentically. Wear something that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and put-together. When in doubt, keep it simple!
